Entertainment & Education in Heat refuges
Heat Refuge is a service design concept for the entertainment and education (E&E) experience inside community heat refuges. Extreme heat doesn't just affect the body, it affects mood, behaviour, and how people cope with shared space. The project looked at how a refuge could support emotional recovery and gentle engagement at the same time, for visitors with very different needs.

Background
Heat refuges are usually designed around cooling alone. But elderly visitors, families with kids, and sensory-sensitive users all arrive overwhelmed in different ways, and they all share the same room. The goal was to design a service that could hold both calm recovery and light engagement without one undoing the other.
The project moved from research into framing into a tested concept, building up evidence at each stage before locking in a direction.
Research & Framing
I looked at how people have used entertainment and education to cope with past crises, from disaster shelters to COVID lockdowns, to find patterns in how humans self-soothe during disruption. This fed into a core paradox: heat-stressed and elderly visitors need calm, low-stimulus recovery, while children and teens need light engagement to manage boredom, and both groups share the same space.
Metaphor Testing
I tested three framings against this paradox, airport lounge, campsite, and gym, stress testing each against archetypes like elderly visitors, neurodivergent users, and highly heat-stressed people. Airport lounge logic won, it offers predictable zoning, calm pacing, and flexibility for individuals and groups without demanding energy from anyone.
Concept & Blueprinting
The airport framing became the backbone for the actual service. I mapped the full service blueprint across four phases, Arrival, Calm Recovery, E&E Engagement, and Transition & Exit, defining what users do, what staff do, and what backstage systems support each step.
Journey Mapping & Service Recovery
I built customer journeys for three personas (elderly, family with children, sensory-sensitive/neurodivergent), then mapped how each journey breaks under pressure and how staff recover it, plus a parallel staff journey covering facilitators, calm monitors, and volunteers across a full shift.
Heat Refuge gives visitors a clearly zoned space to recover from heat stress and choose their own level of engagement, instead of one generic waiting room.
Quiet Recovery Lounge
Soft seating, low lighting, and a sound-reduced environment for elderly, overheated, or sensory-sensitive visitors to settle first, before anything else is asked of them.
Light Learning Corners
Books, puzzles, audio stories, and simple digital learning, low-effort cognitive engagement that doesn't add to heat stress.
Activity Hub for Families & Teens
Craft materials, drawing, and card games, structured but gentle, so kids and teens have somewhere to direct their energy without disturbing quieter zones.
Movement Micro-Sessions
3-5 minute chair-based stretches and breathing routines, accessible to elderly and low-mobility users, used to reset the room between activity cycles.
Clear Zoning & Wayfinding
Airport-style signage marking quiet, activity, and movement zones, so visitors can make low-effort decisions about where to go without asking staff.
Outcomes
Here, the outcomes and achievements of the project are highlighted, including user feedback, adoption rates, and industry recognition.
Key Paradox Resolved
The central tension, calm recovery vs active engagement, was addressed by separating zones spatially rather than trying to design one activity that suited everyone. Visitors self-select based on what they need in the moment.
Stress Tested Across Archetypes
The concept was tested against elderly, children, teenagers, individuals vs families, mobility-impaired, neurodivergent, and highly heat-stressed users. Airport framing held up consistently, where campsite and gym framings failed for at least one group each.
Service & Staff Blueprinting
The final concept was translated into a full service blueprint plus staff journeys for facilitators, calm monitors, and volunteers, covering training focus, recruitment sourcing, and daily checklists for both routine and exception scenarios (noise spikes, crowding, heat exhaustion signs).
The Final Deliverable
Heat Refuge exists as a complete service design proposal, including blueprint, customer and staff journeys, key service moments, and an implementation strategy ready to pilot in real community heat refuge settings.
